Property of PCD Foundation This is an example of the impaired motility that may be observed in a basic microscopic examination of PCD biopsy tissue. This patient has a DNAH5 mutation leading to defects in the outer dynein arms. There are many motility patterns observed in PCD ranging from no visible motility to profound impairment (as in this video clip) to almost normal or normal-appearing ciliary motility. Microscopic visual assessments of motility are not sufficient to rule the disorder in or out. |
